Plato on Piety

Anyone who is unfair to humans cannot respect God. -Porphyry

WP_20180130_22_23_31_Pro.jpg

As we have written again on piety, from different ancient Hellenes writers, we will continue that tradition today, by presenting a taste of platonic theology, through the book Laws, which is the last dialogue of Plato. It consists of 12 books and an additional one. In the tenth book we read about three major crimes, which are three cases of disrespect against the gods. The first case is that gods do not exist. The second case is that gods don't care about humane problems. The third case is that humans can bribe the gods with offerings so that they won't be harsh on his unjust actions. Those ideas are crimes against gods and Plato is proving that ignorance is the cause of them. He also proves why those three ideas are wrong. In the article we will see a synopsis of the tenth book, centering aroung piety.

Introduction to Stoic Philosophy

We have presented opinions of Zenon and Epictetus in the blog, but we hadn’t written anything on Stoic Philosophy, this great school of antiquity. We don’t often see Philosophy in blogs about Hekate and even in blogs with a broader range of the subject of Witchcraft and Magick. In “A Witch Alone at the Crossroads” we consider Philosophy as a basic factor for understanding the cult and the mysteries of the Goddess. There is no way that can be achieved an appropriate understanding of Neoplatonism and of the Chaldean Oracles, without an understanding of the basic teachings of the systems which influenced them.

In ancient Hellas, Philosophy’s upper part was theology and it asked much influence in the religion. So, why not?

The Ancients Wouldn’t Had Blocked you in a Dialogue

As an active member in the community of the Goddess Hekate, I participate in conversations providing evidence, experiences and my opinion whenever I see that I can help. Sometimes, I see some odd opinions online and in my attempt to understand how those were formed, I start a discussion by making questions. I am sure that you have an experience where you ask a question and the other side thinks you are rude, arrogant, disrespectful, fool, troll that you misbehave etc. A famous author wrote once an imaginary dialogue: Someone is accusing him that he eats babies and he kills cats. Suddenly he finds that profile and asks a question: “how do you know that”. Then the profile responds: “Oh, look he is attacking me again.” Total mess huh? A sad state to be honest.

Important Teachings from the Philosophy Of Life

Philosophy of Life is a series of lectures given by a modern Hellene, legendary, philologist, Ioannes Sykoutres, around 1930. Foreign scholars wrote that modern Hellas met a second presence from ancient Hellas, meaning him. He was a professor at the university of Athens and he studied at the Universities of Athens, Berlin and Leipzig, entering the circle of Willamowitz and Jaeger. He founded philological societies for students, writers and professors and the school Askraios. He also participated in any attempt of bringing the ancient and the modern civilization to the surface.

This article has not any real connection with the Goddess, but it shows from the eyes and the mind of a philosopher, how we should think about life and how to be a hero of life, if we chose that role. In the text that follows, I have chosen the main teachings based on his book "The Philosophy of Life", divided in categories. His philosophy seems to be heavily influenced by the stoic philosophy (expect an article soon).

The Illusive Goddess

The following article is going to make some people mad, cause them mania to the point that they may even want to hit their screen. It is not suitable for people who base their practices and ideas regardings the cult of Hekate, on illusive personal gnosis, feelings, channelings, New Age ideas etc. Hopefully, the readers of this blog base their practices on well documented historical and archaeological facts. Those readers, our readers, may continue reading. They others are kindly requested to exit that page, as it will get them upset.

Really, not few times I read online, in fora, groups, blogs, websites information about the Goddess Hekate, which are not true. In fact, they do not come from any book, research, ancient depiction or any other kind of real source. Most of the times, the writers of those texts have a group of supporters, who they have read the blog, the book or they have taken a step forward on exercising with those new information on their daily devotional work. Even new non traditional "traditions” have been born out of this kind of new information. Most of the times, when I write an ancient source proving that things are not like that, or when I ask for sources, they block me or tell me things like evolution. Evolution on what? I prefer being old fashioned. katakouzinos_meme.jpg

Starting the Connection with the Goddess

A question that I had when I was beginning to establish a stronger connection with the Goddess Hekate, was "how can I do it?" I was invoking the Goddess inside the circle, I knew the necessary mythology about Her, a big part of it I had read in Witchcraft books. When I felt the calling from Her, I saw this matter of connection more seriously. Well, I couldn't avoid it. The Goddess was communicating with me, there was no way not to see the signs. I liked that She wanted to work with me. I tried to do some things and I also asked for guidance of my friend Katerina, who was also a devotee. One of the things I did, was to read, to study, to search about Her. And from that starting point, I made a secure ground for building a safe and strong relationship.

The Goddess in a Hellenic Song

20 years ago, a Hellenic singer, Alkestis Protopsalte, published a song and a video clip. Her real name is Alkestis Sevaste Attikiouzel. She was born in Alexandreia of Egypt and moved to Athens due to political events. She was a runner and after that she became a singer. She had a great success. Her contribution is so recognized that she even became a minister of culture for a month in 2015. Both the song we are going to see and the video have strong influences and symbolism of our Goddess Hekate. It is not quite possible that she or the production team had something like that in mind. But the result is a song aligned with Hekate. I have think of it many times. How the Goddess can interfere in our daily lives and pass a message massively without having the concious mind in the route, to understand Her actions. In this article, I am going to share my thoughs with you, regardings a special song, called "lava".

Hekate in the Golden Dawn Temple Tarot - Part Two

Almost a year ago, I wrote an article with Hekate in the G.D. Temple Tarot. It is time to expand it and be more analytical. In this article I am going to focus on the Moon card of the Major Arcana and how the Goddess is related with that card.
